Defending Civil Liberties is Defending American Values

By AAF | Sep 25, 2024

Individual liberty is consistently threatened by governments at all levels.

This includes the freedom of religion, the right to free speech, the right to due process, the right to remain free from unreasonable searches and seizures, the right to self-defense, and many more.

Since the beginning, American Action Fund has been a firm defender of Civil Liberties, taking a no-compromise approach to the defense of your rights. As of our most recent count, AAF’s Liberty Legislators have passed 173 civil liberties bills into law.

One example of our no-compromise advocacy is when we demand legislators pass Constitutional Carry laws in states where these laws have yet to be adopted.

Most recently, members of AAF’s Hazlitt Coalition and grassroots activists mobilized by AAF secured two new Constitutional Carry laws: one in South Carolina and one in Louisiana.

Another critical area where Civil Liberties need to be defended is ending the government’s practice of stealing from its citizens through Civil Asset Forfeiture.

In many states, the government can seize property used in the commission of an alleged crime and keep it, even if the property owner is innocent. Police can often confiscate property from law-abiding citizens by simply alleging that it was used in a crime. This must stop.

In Colorado, Reps. Brandi Bradley and Ken Degraff passed the Due Process Asset Forfeiture Act in 2023, allowing law enforcement to confiscate and keep private property only when the defendant is convicted of a crime.

The use of no-knock warrants and the proliferation of surveillance technology are just two examples of current threats to the Fourth Amendment protections against unreasonable searches.

Increasingly, governments and their various bureaucracies are cracking down on the right to speak freely. College administrators work to silence students they don’t agree with. Government agents work with social media companies to suppress voices they don’t like.

Indiana State Rep. Chris Jeter, a member of AAF’s Liberty Coalition, passed House Bill 1190 in 2022, which states that a state educational institution may not limit speech or expression.

American Action Fund and our allies are on the frontlines in defense of civil liberties nationwide.
