Michigan Supreme Court’s Shocking Decision Puts Parental Rights at Risk

By AAF | Oct 29, 2024

In a decision that defies logic, the Michigan Supreme Court has decided to allow schools to hide what they’re teaching from parents. In America, a country that is supposed to pride itself on freedom and transparency, schools are keeping parents in the dark when it comes to curriculum being force-fed to their kids.

The court ruled that parents don’t have the right to see lesson plans or class materials, even though their tax dollars pay for public education. This is a disgraceful decision that undermines parental rights. Take the case of Carol Beth Litkouhi, a courageous mother who simply wanted to know what her child was learning in a class titled “A History of Ethnic and Gender Studies.” The school flat-out refused, telling her she had no right to access that information. This is a huge problem. Parents deserve to know what’s being taught to their kids—no exceptions.

Accountability is supposed to be the bedrock of our government. But now, schools think they can take your money, educate your children, and still keep you in the dark about what’s happening in the classroom. That’s not how this works. Parents should be in charge of their children’s education, not some unelected school board hiding lesson plans likely full of woke indoctrination. If schools aren’t willing to be transparent, what else are they covering up? This lack of openness is a massive red flag. Schools don’t want parents involved because they fear the backlash that would come if parents knew exactly what was being taught.

And what about the court’s ruling? They say that Michigan’s Freedom of Information Act (FOIA)—the very law designed to give the public access to government records—doesn’t apply to teachers’ work.

The fact is, teachers are public employees, paid by taxpayers, and their work should absolutely be public. What if we applied the same logic to police officers, city workers, or any other government employee? Hiding their work from the public would be a disaster. The principle is simple – government employees work for the people, and the people have the right to know what they’re doing.

It’s time to get serious about transparency and make sure schools are held accountable. If taxpayers are paying the bills, they have every right to see the work being done with their money. Period.

The Michigan Supreme Court made a serious mistake with this ruling. It’s not just an attack on transparency; it’s an attack on parental rights. It’s time to hold public schools accountable and ensure that parents know exactly what’s being taught in their children’s classrooms. Let’s fix this and remind the government that it works for the people—not the other way around.
