Federal appeals court rules Minnesota cannot ban adults under 21 from carrying firearms

The 8th U.S. Circuit Court of appeals ruled on Tuesday that Minnesota cannot ban adults under 21 from carrying firearms.  

“Importantly, the Second Amendment’s plain text does not have an age limit,” wrote U.S. Circuit Judge Duane Benton in the opinion released by the court on Tuesday, July 16, 2024.

The court case cited the Supreme Court ruling in New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen. A case that revolutionized the handling of Second Amendment rights in the court system, requiring restrictions on gun rights be “consistent with this nation’s historical tradition of firearm regulation.

The plaintiffs in the case included Kristin Worth, Austin Dye, Axel Anderson, Minnesota Gun Owners Caucus, Second Amendment Foundation, and Firearms Policy Coalition, Inc.

The anti-Second Amendment group Everytown for Gun Safety and multiple states run by rabidly anti-gun leaders were named as additional defendants in the case.

Similar lawsuits based off the Bruen decision have been filed by multiple gun rights groups across the country targeting more than just the legal age at which citizens can carry a firearm.

It’s safe to say the ruling in New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen will continue to be a boon for gun rights far into the future.
