In a resounding victory for Second Amendment advocates, House Bill 159, which sought to introduce Red Flag Gun Confiscation laws in New Hampshire, has successfully been tabled and killed. This triumph underscores the power of grassroots activism, as dedicated citizens—with the help of American Action Fund—mobilized to defend their constitutional rights against government overreach. Activists flooded their representatives with calls and emails, ensuring that their elected officials understood the deep resistance to any measure that threatened gun rights.
House Bill 159 would have given the state the authority to seize firearms from law-abiding citizens based on the state’s own evaluation of one’s “mental health,” without due process, and regardless of whether or not a crime had actually been committed. This is a prime example of government overreach and a complete lack of reverence to the Constitution.
Among the strongest, and most important, voices opposing HB 159 was pro-Second Amendment Representative Cyril Aures. In a passionate floor speech, the Hazlitt Coalition member reminded his colleagues and constituents of the Granite State’s reputation for Second Amendment protections:
“We are a top 3 state in economy, personal freedom, and firearm safety. This law has no place in New Hampshire.”
Aures’ words echoed the sentiments of the vast majority of New Hampshire residents who recognize that gun control measures like Red Flag laws create opportunities for government corruption. Red Flag Gun Confiscation laws allow for the removal of firearms from individuals without due process, often based on vague allegations or unverified concerns. These laws entirely ignore the Second Amendment, allowing for gun seizures before an individual has had their day in court.
The tabling of House Bill 159 is a testament to the effectiveness of citizen-driven activism. American Action Fund spurred pro-gun New Hampshire residents forward and proved, once again, that when the people speak with a unified voice, lawmakers must listen. This victory should serve as a rallying call for all Americans who value their freedom.
While this battle has been won, the fight for Second Amendment rights is far from over. Anti-gun legislators and special interest groups will continue to push for measures like Red Flag laws under different names and frameworks. It is imperative that activists remain engaged, informed, and ready to mobilize at a moment’s notice.
American Action Fund remains steadfast in its mission to protect the rights of gun owners across the country. We will continue to fight against unconstitutional laws and support lawmakers who uphold the principles of liberty. The people of New Hampshire sent a clear message: their rights are not up for negotiation.
