Red State City Adopts Gun Control, Ignores State Law

By AAF | Sep 12, 2024

Using violent crime as a pretense to strip citizens of their rights is the oldest play in the book, but the left keeps getting more devious with their ploy.

Most recently, the City of Montgomery in deep-red Alabama adopted a new gun control ordinance that undermines the Constitutional Carry law that went into effect just last year.

That law, passed in 2022 with the support of American Action Fund, simply states that law-abiding citizens don’t need a permit (or a government permission slip) to exercise their Second Amendment right to bear arms.

It is a commonsense policy that has been adopted by more than half the states in the country and has led to decreased crime rates

Mayor Steven Reed (D-Montgomery) himself admits that violent crime is down in the city, yet he still chose to penalize law-abiding citizens exercising their rights.

Reed said of the ordinance, “What we hope this will do is maybe give us a little bit of movement back to being able to take some of those guns.” [emphasis added]

Montgomery’s ordinance requires anyone who is carrying a firearm to provide law enforcement with a photo ID if asked. If they fail to do so, the police will confiscate the gun and destroy it unless the owner can provide proof of purchase within 30 days.

Can you find proof of purchase for all your guns?

This is just another way to force law-abiding citizens to jump through hoops and comply with government demands, and it will do nothing to reduce crime.

Thankfully, Alabama’s Attorney General Steve Marshall sees through the games, recognizing the new ordinance not only violates individual rights but also violates state law

Instead of blaming the actions of violent criminals on law-abiding gun owners, local officials should do their jobs and hold people accountable for their own actions.

Crime prevention researcher John Lott told 1819 News, “Often, what you see is politicians want to blame somebody else. They make policies that make it harder for police to go and do their job, and their response is, rather than accepting the culpability that they have, is to go and blame somebody else.”

American Action Fund is on the frontlines, fighting for gun rights not only in Alabama, but in states across the country.

We believe the Second Amendment is clear. Shall not be infringed doesn’t provide an out. There is no room for compromise when it comes to the right to keep and bear arms.

We believe the Second Amendment is the one that protects the rest. Without it, freedom of speech would be eviscerated. The freedom of religion would be disregarded. Illegal searches and seizures would become a regular occurrence.

We will not give in to emotional and intellectually dishonest appeals to disarm.

We will not allow weak-kneed politicians to negotiate our rights away.

We will not accept compromise on the Second Amendment and will be the first to hold anti-gun politicians accountable.

If the Second Amendment is compromised, liberty is lost, and we will not let that happen.
