Liberty-Minded Leaders Push for the End of Property Taxes

By Nate Stidd | May 2, 2025

A growing coalition of liberty-minded political leaders is spearheading a bold movement to eliminate property taxes, arguing that these taxes undermine true property ownership and freedom. At the heart of the effort is a shared belief that homeowners should not be forced to “pay rent” to the government year after year simply to live on land and homes they already own.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has emerged as a leading voice in the property tax repeal movement. In a February press conference, DeSantis laid out his concerns, stating, “Just for being on your property, you’ve got to write a check to the government every year, so you're basically paying rent to the government to live on your own property." He reiterated these views in his March State of the State address, proposing a $5 billion tax relief plan and supporting a constitutional amendment to eliminate property taxes altogether.

In Ohio, the movement is gaining traction. Gubernatorial candidate Vivek Ramaswamy has made the repeal of property taxes a central campaign promise, along with the elimination of state income taxes. “It is YOUR money, not the government’s,” Ramaswamy declared during a recent event. “We need to bring down property taxes in this state immediately, eventually down to zero.”

Joining Ramaswamy is Representative Ron Ferguson, who recently published an op-ed affirming his commitment to abolishing property taxes in Ohio. “None of us truly own our homes; we only rent them from Uncle Sam,” Ferguson wrote. He called on a coalition of like-minded legislators and potential executive leadership to challenge entrenched political norms in Columbus.

Ohio lawmakers such as Representatives Jennifer Gross, Levi Dean, and Michelle Teska have already proven themselves by resisting politically motivated budget bloat, including funding for projects like the Cleveland Football Stadium. These legislators—and others who’ve joined them—represent a core group prepared to fight for a fundamental reimagining of Ohio’s tax structure.

There is a growing movement within Conservative politics that is coming around to the idea that true property ownership should not come with an annual government invoice. Real liberty includes owning your home free and clear, without ongoing government claims.

With momentum building and grassroots support rising, this movement could make Ohio the first state in the nation to fully repeal property taxes—a move that would undoubtedly send shockwaves across the country.
