Republican Establishment in Idaho Blocks Tax Reform, Sidelines Conservatives

By AAF | Aug 26, 2024

Last week, American Action Fund launched grassroots mobilization efforts aimed at exposing weak-kneed Republicans who continually block tax reform in the Gem State and mobilizing Idahoans for the fight to come in January.

In a text message sent to people across the state, AAF emphasized the importance of eliminating the grocery tax “as many Idahoans struggle under the weight of Biden’s inflation.”

Idaho Freedom Foundation reports, “38 states either don’t charge sales tax or have ended their tax on food,” yet Idaho continues collecting revenues on basic household necessities.

IFF also points out that Idaho is in the company of Hawaii, Mississippi, and South Dakota as the only four states that fully tax grocery purchases.

Repealing the grocery tax would allow individuals to keep more of their earnings, increasing disposable income and enabling greater financial autonomy. By reducing the cost of essential goods, people can make independent spending decisions, decreasing state control over personal finances.

By ensuring that basic necessities like food remain affordable, repealing the grocery tax protects individuals’ ability to access essential resources. This move also supports economic freedom, giving low-income families more control of their resources and a better chance to improve their circumstances without being burdened by regressive taxes.

As the grassroots mobilizes ahead of next year’s legislative session, it will be interesting to see what comes of this commonsense legislative proposal.
