California Governor Gavin Newsom Signs Bill Further Degrading Parental Rights in Schools

By AAF | Jul 19, 2024

California Governor Gavin Newsom signed AB 1955 into law, banning schools from requiring staff to notify parents if their child is undergoing a gender identification change on Monday, July 15, 2024.

It is the first law of its kind in the country and passed the California Senate on a party-line vote in June.

The ban on school rules requiring parental notification further degrades parental rights in school districts across the state, and represents a massive overreach by the state government.

The new law was dreamed up after multiple school districts in the state passed policies that required schools to notify parents if their child requested to change their gender identification.

Something that many, but unfortunately not all, teachers would promptly inform parents about to this day.

However, the state of California views the right of parents to know about the decisions their children make in school as a state power, rather than a parental right.

So, for the first time in the history of the United States, parents in California no longer have the right to know about what their children are up to in school.

In response, the nonprofit Liberty Justice Center filed a lawsuit on behalf of one of the school districts that previously passed a parental notification policy.

“School officials do not have the right to keep secrets from parents, but parents do have a constitutional right to know what their minor children are doing at school,” said Emily Rae, senior counsel at the Liberty Justice Center in a press release. “Parents are the legal guardians of their children, not Governor Newsom, Attorney General (Rob) Bonta, or Superintendent (Tony) Thurmond. We will continue to defend parents’ rights and children’s well-being by challenging invasive laws like AB 1955 in court, at no cost to taxpayers.” –LJC Press Release Quote from Ed Source
