Hospital Price Transparency Passes Pennsylvania House

By AAF | Jul 22, 2024

On July 11, House Bill 2339 passed the Pennsylvania House of Representatives on a vote of 168 to 34. If it becomes law, HB 2339 would require hospitals to publicly list the prices of all their procedures and services.

Hospital price transparency legislation ensures hospitals can no longer price gouge their patients without consent. Capitalism requires the voluntary exchange of goods, and an exchange cannot be voluntary if prices are not known before the transaction.

No other industry in the United States operates this way.

Luckily, pro-liberty legislators like Liberty Coalition member Representative David Rowe are leading the charge to end these deceptive practices.

Led by Rowe, HB 2339 made it through its first legislative hurdle last week. Now, Hospital Price Transparency faces the Pennsylvania Senate, where Republicans hold a one-seat majority.

HB 2339 has a long way to go, but there is plenty of room for optimism that it will become law.
