Conservatives Force Jason Stephens to Abandon his Speakership

By AAF | Nov 21, 2024

A massive shakeup is underway in the Ohio House of Representatives as current Speaker Jason Stephens withdrew his bid for reelection to remain the leader of the lower chamber.

This comes after many of Stephen’s allies lost their elections earlier this year to more conservative Republicans, making it impossible for him to secure the votes needed to retain the position.

Stephens was first elected as Speaker of the House in 2023, when 22 liberal Republicans conspired with House Democrats to undermine the candidate chosen by the majority of the Republican caucus.

Numerous conservative priorities failed under Stephens’ liberal reign. That combined with the betrayal of the Blue 22 ignited a fury within the pro-liberty wing of Ohio politics.

Organizations like American Action Fund railed against the Blue 22 and their efforts to crush pro-liberty policies and continue expanding Ohio state government by working with the Democrats.

As the pressure mounted, several members of the Blue 22 chose not to seek reelection.

Others lost to more conservative challengers in the primary election. When all was said and done, the Blue 22 turned into the Blue 13, leaving Stephens without hope for a second term as Speaker of the House.

Republican legislative leaders nationwide should take this as a warning. Americans demand their liberty be restored and their government restrained.

Failure to do that may result in politicians being stripped of power.
