We Can Pack It Up and Go Home… Right?

So, Donald Trump has won the election, and America is saved! The world can rest easy—liberty is secure, government overreach is a thing of the past, and we’re all on the fast track to a small, accountable government. Mission accomplished! We can all pack up, head home, and let Trump do his thing, right?

If only it were that easy.

Sure, Trump’s victory might be a good thing for the federal government (and let’s be real, it’s certainly better than the alternative). But if anyone thinks this means the fight for liberty in the states is over, well, I’ve got a few bridges to sell you. While the big guy may be in the White House, the truth is that the fight for freedom is far from finished—and if anything, it’s time to double down at the state level. Let’s break it down.

A Lame Duck Biden Is Still Dangerous

With Trump on his way to the Oval Office, Biden may have been tossed to the side, but he’s still sitting on two full months of lame-duck time. And if you thought the old “governing by pen and phone” approach was bad, imagine what a departing president who has nothing to lose could pull off. Biden may be packing his bags, but that doesn’t mean he won’t leave some “surprises” on his way out.

This is where state legislatures come in. The White House can only do so much to counter whatever bureaucratic chaos is unleashed in Washington. If state governments aren’t ready to push back and put up barriers to federal overreach, then Biden’s parting “gifts” could be sticking around for much longer than he does.

American Action Fund is the nation’s leader in the fight for liberty at the state level, and we are doubling down on our aggressive programs to crush the tyranny that ravages state governments and restore liberty for our children and grandchildren. Local Tyrants Aren’t Going Away

The Founders knew something about power—namely, that people who have it rarely just hand it back. Donald Trump’s second term might help ease some concerns at the federal level, but we’ve still got plenty of mini-despots running city councils, school boards, and state agencies who think they’re the next Napoleon.

We’ve seen state-level crackdowns (by members of both parties) on everything from economic freedom to personal choice. Want to open a business? There’s a bureaucrat for that. Want to decide how your kids are educated? That’ll be decided three counties over. These issues won’t vanish with a new president. If anything, state and local leaders with anti-liberty leanings will double down. And if we don’t have the right people in place to push back, it’s not going to matter who’s in the Oval Office.

Slashing regulations and firing bureaucrats is a top priority for American Action Fund’s fight to limit the role of government in our everyday lives. All too often, the folks tasked with running state agencies run amok with power and need to be stopped. 

The Battle for Liberty Never Ends

Remember, the federal government wasn’t designed to handle every little problem. States are supposed to be the primary battleground for liberty. Hopefully another Trump administration will result in lower government spending, the elimination of unconstitutional federal agencies, and less involvement in our lives, but in the end, what happens at the state capitol is often more impactful than what happens in D.C. 

That is good news, because we can make a difference at the state capitol! 

If we’re serious about securing liberty long-term, it’s going to take more than ensuring the lesser of two evils secures the presidency every four years. We need to keep our eyes on the prize: a strong coalition of pro-liberty state leaders who can keep the feds in check and fend off the homegrown authoritarians.

So, take a breather now that the election is over! But don’t get too comfortable. Many state legislatures will convene in just two months, and we need to be prepared. Keep fighting for pro-liberty policies in your state legislatures, because if we don’t, nothing will really change in our day-to-day lives. Let’s keep America free, one state at a time.
