Anti-gun Michigan Legislature Passes Snitch Line Law to Target Gun Owners

By AAF | Oct 3, 2024

The Michigan legislature has taken yet another step in its relentless assault on the Second Amendment. With the passage of HB 5503, the state has created a disturbing new avenue for government overreach: a $1 million “snitch line” for children to anonymously report their parents for allegedly improper firearm storage. This comes on the heels of SB 79, which criminalizes the so-called “improper” storage of firearms in homes where minors might have access. Taken together, these bills represent a dangerous move toward a nanny state that is hostile to gun-owning families.

The problems with this hotline are numerous. For one, the system could easily be abused. A frustrated child—perhaps angry after being disciplined—could use this hotline as a tool for revenge, reporting their parents out of spite rather than concern. Or, as children do, they might treat it as a joke, making prank calls without fully understanding the serious consequences. Even worse, how will the state ensure it is truly a child calling the hotline and not an outsider with an anti-gun agenda?

Michigan State Rep. Angela Rigas, a member of American Action Fund’s Liberty Coalition, captured the essence of this bill’s overreach, saying, “This hotline is nothing more than a page out of the Stasi playbook—encouraging children to spy on their own families. This is a dangerous step toward weaponizing children in households for the left, and an outrageous government overreach under the guise of public safety.”

Many Second Amendment supporters see this hotline as a perversion of family dynamics, exploiting a child’s innocence. In fact, children may not fully grasp whether a firearm is safely stored or not, meaning the government is leveraging children’s innocence to further its dystopian political agenda.

Meanwhile, anti-gun liberals in the Michigan legislature are feigning innocence, claiming this hotline will simply notify schools, which in turn will inform parents. But there’s a darker truth: the bill contains no safeguard to prevent anonymous tips from being passed directly to law enforcement or being stored in a database. Nor is there any protection for parents falsely accused. A simple misunderstanding or a moment of immaturity could unleash a cascade of legal troubles for innocent families.

This hotline is a blatant attack on gun owners and yet another move toward the creation of a police state. By using children as pawns in this crusade against the Second Amendment, Michigan’s lawmakers are undermining both parental rights and basic constitutional freedoms. These measures aren’t about safety—they’re about control.
